OLD MASTERS DRAWINGS AND PRINTS

Collection
Curator: Mgr. Martina Vyskupová

The collection of old masters drawings and prints was created on the basis of 9,600 works transferred to the newly established City Gallery (31 December 1958) from the City Museum. The first decade was crucial especially in terms of structuring and new cataloguing, which was extremely difficult due to the heterogeneity and extent of the collection. The credit for a new categorisation of the collection by type and subject goes especially to its curator and then director of the gallery, Ľudovít Medvecký, and his colleagues.

The collection of old masters drawings and prints represents the second largest collection of the gallery. From the very beginning, the emphasis was put on works associated with Bratislava. The collection comprises many views of the city as well as scenes of coronations of Hungarian kings and queens that took place in Bratislava between 1563 and 1830. Besides, the collection includes the series of views of other Hungarian towns, portraits or genre, military and biblical scenes as well as an album and set of mezzotints created in the 18th century after portraits by Ján Kupecký. The 19th century is represented by a large series of portraits by Ferdinad von Lütgendorff and Jozef Heinbucher.

The collection of Italian painting includes big names like Antonio Tempesta or Giovanni Battista Piranesi. From among Dutch and Flemish masters we can mention Lucas van Leyden, Johann Sadeler and Hendrik Goltizius. The collection also includes copies of great masters, such as Albrecht Dürer or Rembrandt van Rijn.

Like in case of prints, the selection of drawings can also be considered rather the result of a happenchance than of a critical selection. The largest part of the collection is created by albums and drawings by the 19th century artists, the most interesting of which are works of local provenience by Eduard Majsch or Alojz Rigele.

And finally we must not forget the set of coloured prints displayed in the two rooms of Mirbach Palace with panel ceiling. It is an original installation of 290 works of French, German, Dutch and Italian proveniences.
